Born in Frankfurt, Petra Lang began her music studies with the violin before she went on to study Voice with Gertie Charlent at the Music Academy of Darmstadt and worked from 1989 -2006 with Ingrid Bjoner. Awards include placing first in the s'Hertogenbosch, Robert-Stolz and Girardi International Singing Competitions. Currently Ms Lang is much in demand for her Wagnerian roles of Kundry, Sieglinde, Brangäne, Venus, Ortrud, Adriano, Bartoks Judith, Berlioz Cassandre, Strauss Ariadne and for her interpretation of Gustav Mahlers’ oeuvre. The singer appeared at all major opera houses in Europe and the US, at the festivals of Bayreuth, Salzburg and Bregenz, has sung with the major orchestras worldwide and has worked with the leading conductors including Abbado, Boulez, Bychkov, Chailly, Chung, Davis, von Dohnany, Eschenbach, Haitink, Harding, Inbal, Janowski, Jordan, Metha, Muti, Saraste, Sawallisch, Rattle, Runnicles, Tate, Thielemann. Petra Lang won 2002 two Grammy Awards for her interpretation of Cassandra as part of London Symphony's live recording of Berlioz' Les Troyens conducted by Sir Colin Davis.
Petra Lang enjoys a reputation as being a sensitive lieder interpreter, and has given recitals in Wigmore Hall London, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Théâtre du Châtelet and Louvre Paris, Schubertiade Feldkirch Austria, Edinburgh Festival, New York's Carnegie Hall, at the Geneva, Brussels and Gent theatres and throughout her native Germany. She recorded the role of Ortrud in Wagner’s Lohengrin with the WDR under the baton of Semyon Bychkov. |
